STATION FACILITIES

The station facilities are fairly basic, comprising laboratory space and bunk accommodation for 9 visitors in two two-room cabins.

Since late 1999 we have had the new air-conditioned laboratory fully operational, which will permit a wider range of research activities to be carried out, including biochemical projects.

Since late 2000, we also have a small air-conditioned machine workshop with lathe, mill and related equipment.

The Station has a small reference library (and would appreciate donations of recent text and reference books!)

There is a good range of field equipment, microscopes, radio-tracking gear, plant drying facilities, survey gear, etc., as well as excellent workshop facilities.

The region is remote from grid power and the station is served by solar power with a generator backup. There is no general air-conditioning (except for the main laboratory building) and buildings are constructed to have as minimal a thermal mass as possible. While laptop computers are permitted, the power drawn by desktop computers (and the humidity) makes them unsuitable for use at the station.

A washing machine is available and sometimes a gas/electric dryer for wet periods. A freezer is also available (-10 to -20C), as is solar hot water.

Water comes from a local spring. Water-borne pathogens are virtually unknown in the region and therefore most surface water is safe to drink.

Adjacent to the Station is an extensive exotic fruit orchard, primarily specialising in fruit of Indo-Malaysian origin.
