SCRAPBOOK 1998 - Flying Fox Research

Haley the Flying Fox

Flying Fox survey by Dr. Hugh Spencer (Director of Research), Stephen Garnett (QNPWS), Olivia Whybird (Millaa Millaa) and Alexys Chelsea Eden (Cairns) was carried out, with the assistance of many volunteers.
This was the first comprehensive count of the population of spectacled flying foxes in the Wet Tropics World Heritage area of Queensland (these flying foxes are almost completely restricted to this area). The count covered the area from Cooktown to Tully. An estimated 150,000 animals were accounted for, less than 10% of the population that existed in the 1950's, and the population of these "keystone" animals is in steep decline.
The property that contains the Research Station was, when it was purchased, a cleared 25-acre block with a small amount of rainforest over a creek. It is now about 50% reforested and reforestation is proceeding at about two acres per year, largely through the efforts of a large band of volunteers who stomp the grass, clear weeds from seedlings and plant trees. The Station is pioneering a number of techniques for regeneration of forests on grassed and degraded land. Thatcher
